With a population of more than 24 million, Shanghai isn't just
the biggest city in China, it's also the nation's street food epicentre. In
part, that is thanks to the area's compelling food culture.
Grand Shanghai Banquet at Sri Petaling might just be our new
found favourite weekend breakfast restaurant! It is a slightly a different
concept from most dim sum shops around Klang Valley. After taking a look at their
menu, and you will see why I love it so.
The warm and cosy restaurant boasts a large dining area enough
to fit a group of 8 on the table. Decorations are posh and inspired by the
Shanghaies classy theme with beautiful lanterns. Certain part of the restaurant
walls have beautiful written Chinese characters all over them, a beautiful
setting of a dynasty palace in the olden days.

My favourite among the steam variations was the juicy Xiao
Long Bao. Xiao Long Bao are all about the filling: ground pork
seasoned with a little ginger and Shaoxing wine mixed with a gelatinized pork
stock that melts on cooking, transforming into a rich, sticky soup. The dumpling
arrived quickly to the table and it was still steamy hot! It came with a small
saucer with threads of ginger and vinegar sauce. The dumpling skin is
wonderfully silky and smooth, not too thin and it could be held up easily with
your chopstick without breaking it. The meat was fresh and the soup surprisingly
clear but full of fragrance from the pork.
The Grand Shanghai Special Baked Bun with BBQ Pork was my
favourite among all the fried dishes. Apparently it is their signature dish as
well, the bun is slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and once
you’ve taken a bite, the taste of the porky sweet, salty lean pork oozes in to
your mouth, oh so heavenly!

The Claypot Porridge Sang Har Prawn was my favourite! It was
voted as the best dish by everyone on the table! You could taste how fresh the
prawn was and the juicy texture when you take a bite. The porridge was smooth
and and rich with flavour from the prawn, the sweetness from the prawn made it
even better! A definitely must try if you are a porridge lover!
Their signature dessert was the “Aloe Vera & Grass Jelly”.
It was served cold with refreshing properties of the aloe vera and cooling
properties of the Grass Jelly! There was a surprised ingredient placed in this
dessert and it was small pearls which is made of yoghurt, every bite burst with
fills the mouth with a strong hint of yoghurt! Definitely a unique taste that
you will not be able to find in most places.
Do check out this place, if you do have cravings for dim sum.
Don’t forget to order the Claypot Porridge Sang Har Prawn and I can guarantee
you that you would enjoy it as much as I do! A treat for all dim sum lovers with
impressive variety of dishes both fried and steam!
